Beyond the Textbook: Black History & Modern Society
Grades 8–12
Beyond the Textbook: Black History & Modern Society is a semester-long full curriculum designed to engage students in African American History through hands-on, project-based learning experiences. This course moves beyond memorization and encourages students to explore history, culture, leadership, music, mental health, entrepreneurship, activism, education, and community impact through real-world research and creative projects.
Students will complete documentary projects, interviews, research essays, film studies, community investigations, historical analysis, presentations, and collaborative activities that connect African American history to modern society. This curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, media literacy, communication skills, cultural awareness, leadership, and student voice.
Throughout the semester, students will explore the contributions, resilience, innovation, and influence of African Americans throughout history while developing research, writing, speaking, and problem-solving skills aligned with Florida middle and high school standards.
